OFFICER DOWN: His Memory Will Live On

Melvin Santiago fulfilled his childhood dreams of becoming a police officer. He was hired by the Jersey City Police Department in December of 2013. After serving just over six (6) months on the force, his life was tragically taken before he was able to exit the patrol car when responding to reports of a robbery at a Walgreen’s store.

“I know the entire city’s thoughts and prayers are with the Santiago family during this difficult time and we mourn together.” –Mayor Steve Fulop

There are inherent dangers associated with the job, but neither of the two responding officers expected an ambush. Unbeknownst to them, an individual had assaulted the armed security guard on duty at the Walgreen’s, take his firearm, and wait outside for the responding officers to arrive. His motive; become famous by getting in a shootout with police.

“Today was a horrible day for Jersey City,”-Mayor Steve Fulop

The perpetrator of this heinous act made headlines, but it will be the name and memory of Officer Melvin Santiago that will be remembered in Jersey City. We started this campaign to raise funds to create a memorial in his loving memory. Join us, as we stand with the Santiago Family, the Jersey City Police Department, and the Jersey City community, in honoring the memory of Officer Melvin Santiago.

ALL FUNDS RAISED BY THIS CAMPAIGN WILL BE USED TO CREATE A MEMORIAL HONORING OFFICER MELVIN SANTIAGO!

All donations are deductible for federal income tax purposes permitted by law.
